Here’s What Happened at Last Night’s ‘Canada’s Great Kitchen Party Vancouver’

We were in the crowd at the Westin Bayshore last night, for the ninth and final Canada’s Great Kitchen Party regional qualifier, to see Chef Bobby Milheron (Homer St. Cafe & BarTableau Bar Bistro, Maxine’s Cafe & Bar) walk away with the gold, as well as the People’s Choice Award. His awarding-winning dish: lightly smoked Canadian Geoduck with B.C. spot prawn terrine, pickled bull kelp, sunchoke, and shellfish jus, paired with Mission Hill Reserve Rosé 2021.

"I’d gone to check out changes. When West restaurant closed last December chef Bobby Milheron migrated downtown to oversee Homer Street Cafe, Tableau and a restaurant-to-be in the former Musette space on Burrard Street. They’re part of the Wentworth Hospitality Group, which runs the Loden Hotel. I was keen to try Milheron’s food at the new venues as I loved the beauty and artful quality of the food at West. He was a sous chef at top-tier Boulevard previous to that."

"A 20-year lease ends and so it’s a sad goodbye to Toptable’s West restaurant. It closes on Dec. 31 after many illustrious years, awards and accolades. So chef Bobby Milheron, an understated but standout chef, has invited restaurant alumni to cook with him."

Dished Vancouver-October 9, 2019

“West has been so honoured to play such an integral role in the city’s vibrant restaurant community,” said Michael Doyle, president of Toptable Group. “Home to so much talent over the years including David Hawksworth, Thierry Busset, and Sabrine Dhaliwal – just to name a few – we are proud of, and grateful to, all of the amazing men and women who have contributed to our success including being named Vancouver Magazine’s Restaurant of the Year.”

Goodlife Vancouver - October 1, 2020

"The Great Canadian Kitchen Party, the lead up to the Canadian Culinary Championships, is underway in cities across Canada and Vancouver’s competition takes place Friday, October 4, 2019 at Rogers Arena. We’ve asked the chefs a few questions to get to know them a bit better and here’s the results from Chef Bobby Milheron from West Restaurant."

Vancouver Sun - July 31, 2019

"Bobby Milheron isn’t the sort of chef who thumps his chest, so you’ll just have to sit down to his food to fully understand that he’s one of the best. He’s quietly graced the kitchen at West restaurant for almost two years following Quang Dang’s departure, and grace is what you’ll find on the plates: Elegant, refined and calmly confident food."

Toptable Group - June 20, 2019

"Thirteen accomplished chefs from across the province brought their A-game to Western Canada’s largest seafood-focused festival and competed in black box heats in front of a judging panel. Chef Bobby’s trio of outstanding dishes, from an Albacore Tuna and Side Stripe Shrimp Roll to an Olive Oil Poached Halibut with Manila Clams and a Geoduck Clam and Swimming Scallops Chowder, led the pack from the first day of competition and captured the judges’ votes for composition, taste, and presentation. He receives a $5000 cheque for his well deserved win and continues the tradition by succeeding the 2018 winner, Toptable Group’s Executive Chef Quang Dang. Fanny Bay Oyster Bar’s Chef Chris Andraza was recognized for his BC seafood creations and took home a notable second place."

SeaWest News - June 8, 2020

"A highly driven and creative talent, Chef Bobby Milheron is known for being an ardent supporter of local and peak-of-season ingredients, which makes him a great addition to the BC Seafood Expo and Festival. Bobby Milheron, Executive Chef of the iconic West Restaurant, South Granville, first discovered his passion for the culinary arts on the East Coast, where he graduated from The Culinary Institute of Canada, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island."

Montecristo Magazine - July 4, 2018

"Milheron’s masterful attitude towards food—innovative, but practical when necessary—shines through in this prix fixe. Summer is about harnessing the freshness of B.C. and translating it onto the plate, and chef does so with exceptional skill, precision, and elegance."

Scout Magazine - October 6, 2017

"Chef Quang will transition to the Araxi kitchen in mid October to allow Chef James to turn his attention to the opening of Il Caminetto. In tandem with this transition, former West kitchen alumni Bobby Milheron will take over for Chef Quang as West’s newly appointed Executive Chef. Chef Milheron transitions from his Senior Sous role at Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar to once again make his home with the talented West brigade." Watch for exciting news to come with a room refresh and a change in the menu direction under Chef Milheron’s leadership."
